London Irish receives two awards in BBC London Sports Awards 2009

London Irish was delighted to receive two awards when the BBC London Sports Awards for 2009 were announced last evening (6th December). This is the first time that the club has featured in the broadcaster’s annual awards which recognise and honour sporting achievement in the capital.

The club was named as the capital’s “Team of the Year” in a category that included Arsenal, Chelsea and the three other Premier Rugby clubs.

Seilala Mapusua was named as the “Rugby Player of the Year” to complete a remarkable year for the Samoan international. Earlier this year he received the London Irish “Players’ Player of the Season” award at the club’s annual awards ceremony and a week later was named as the “RPA Player of the Season”. Last month he was the player featured in the IRB Rugby Photograph of the Year. The overall BBC London Sports Personality Award went to Bermondsey boxer and WBA World Heavyweight Champion, David Haye.
